COLOURS: WHY I HAVE DECIDED TO GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY

adult, Analogue, aperture

“The art direction and production design: practice in lieu of filmmaking.”

I am currently in the process of making my second short film. In the meantime, I am working on this blog, writing my novel & book of short stories, and thinking about what screenplay to write next. But filmmaking is so much of a hustle that I am going to need a consistent pay. But I don’t want to be out of the groove of things as it pertains to the artistic aspect of filmmaking. And that’s when it hit me, photography. And not necessarily because I am a huge fan of photography itself. It’s the artistic direction, the production design, and the person being shot in frame. Lately, I have been interested in the fashion world’s photographic imaging.

I guess you wonder, what does this have to do with filmmaking. To me, a lot; it has a lot to do with making film simply because of the in frame imagery. Not long ago I sat down and started coming up with ideas for various photo shoots that drive that imagery out of me. And the reason why I felt close to fashion is because of the artistic direction that is similar to the picturesque look I want to achieve through film. I love the use of colors in telling a story. And being able to tell a story through imagery is is like putting together my storyboarding. What’s interesting is that photographers have a story board process as well. Another type of photography interesting to me is food photography.

You ever been driving down the road and see a billboard. Or better yet walking down the street and your eye catch the sight of a sign out front of a restaurant. The photo on the billboard or signage on the street has always been of interest to blur, breakfast, close-upme. I always wanted to know the process of how they achieve the look they do for the food. Then I did a little research and found how they set everything up. The process is just as interesting. Even when photographing a meal, you are telling a story in that frame. Which is yet another reason why I have come to respect photography.

And in the end, that is my real connection to photography. Being able to tell a story in pictures is what you must do after writing your script. Explain in pictures/animation what you are aiming to achieve with this script. This will aid in working with your artistic director and production designer. So for me, like I said earlier, fashion has that interesting artistic and production aspect I find interesting. Because it’s the combination of the look of the photos, background, and clothing worn by the models. Hopefully the journey to where I want to be is as enjoyable as it has been so far.

THE K AND J EFFECT: WHY THE KARDASHIAN-JENNERS ARE SO APPEALING TO THE MASSES

Image result for kardashian jenner

“They’re young, rich, beautiful, and influencers.”

For the past ten years, we have been inundated with the presence of the Kardashian-Jenner family. From the reality series of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, to their numerous business ventures. This family has grown into a nearly $1 billion brand that stretches all around the world. We were first introduced to the surname Kardashian from the O.J. Simpson trial. Robert Kardashian, the girls father, was an accomplished attorney who served as one of the counsels for former NFL runningback O.J. Simpson during his trial. He passed away back in 2003, while the name is still being held strong by his daughters. And as an addition came the Jenner family when the mother remarried former Olympian Bruce Jenner (Katelyn). Two of the Jenners would go on to edge out their own identities in society: Kendall and Kylie.

Why has the influence of the sisters grown in size the way it has grown. Ten years ago, when their reality show first aired America, must less the world, didn’t even know of the sisters. As socialites in their hometown of Calabasas (Los Angeles), CA, they were known among a small group of friends. Once the reality show took off, we were first introduced to the second oldest sister, Kim Kardashian. Soon after we began to get to know the two other sisters Kourtney, the oldest, and Khloe, the youngest. Even their brother Robert was brought into the mix. And the influence of the sisters began to spread. We only knew them as reality personalities, not business women. That is until they introduced us to their store in Los Angeles D.A.S.H.

And slowly, but surely, the two Jenner sisters began to emerge as well. We knew them as the rambunctious pre-teens from the reality show. But eventually, Kendall would be introduced into the modeling world via her mother and sisters. Not long after her introduction into modeling came her younger sister Kylie. Now with all the girls more focused on their own business ventures and less with the reality series, my question still remains. How did they manage to garner so much attention? And why do so many young girls and boys flock to them? That’s right girls and boys. And here is one of my theories as far as exposure is concerned.

When we look at the Kardashian-Jenners, they were supposed to be like anyone else who popped on the scene the way they appeared. They were supposed to get their 15 minutes of fame, and vanish like everyone else; yet they didn’t. So, why have they managed to garner attention and stick around so long? Here is a theory of mine, the introduction of social media. Getting involved in social media with an early start before so many other people joined. Their series became popular not that long after airing on television in 2007. But guess what else took off around that time as well Twitter (founded 2006), Instagram (founded 2010), Facebook increased popularity (founded 2004), and YouTube (founded 2005) increased popularity. Also, the launch of major networks such as the one their show is on E!, introduced between the years 2002 – 2009. They became popular right when social media and reality television was taking off. Fact of the matter is, they got in early.

That is a strong reason as to how they became so popular. Then what about the popularity with so many young people. Well, young people are what young people have always been. The age group of 18 – 35 is such a wide demographic, yet this group makes up the validation and association group. From the highly publicized relationships of the sisters, to their signature look. So many young girls and young women want to be associated with the K & J (Kardashian and Jenner) name.  But the boys love them because one, the girls love them. And another reason is the other one, status. Men need to be validated just as women do. So, to men, we look and go young, beautiful, their own wealth, liberated, and famous. Dating a “K” or a “J” would be the equivalent of winning the lotto and moving from your one bedroom apartment into a 10,000 sq. foot manor. The underlying theory is that if you date one of them, or a woman that resembles them, you have arrived.

See, in the end, the Kardashian-Jenners have tapped into something in America. And that something lies in the very fabric of our nation. That something is capitalism, validation, and fame. All three things the sisters have, all three things society holds up as a standard for what you should want, even if you never attain it. I don’t see them going away anytime soon. Because that 15 minutes, is pushing 15 years. And still, with business opportunities endless, fame and being a socialite is crumbs compared to if they really position themselves well. They are in the app world, and we all know how lucrative the tech industry can be. Whether you like them or not, they are no longer socialites, but the society standard.

AUGMENTED REALITY: HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THE WORLD AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Image result for augmented reality

“In a world that is beyond our world.”

Technological innovation has been pushing the bar for decades. Yet as we look back at what was supposed to be the hot items, they are so generic looking now. Especially compared to the great products that are hitting the market in today’s society. We look at the past and say to ourselves, “Wow, that looks Grey Vintage Crt Tvawful.” “I remember when that was the in product that everyone wanted.” But it’s not an awful product, it’s just that the innovation to technology has made such leaps and bounds. I look at televisions in just my lifetime. The picture quality of a television in the past for what I thought was incredible, looks dated now. So what does the future hold?

And when I say what the future holds for us, how will we communicate in the future through various forms of mass communication. Because we already don’t use televisions like we once did. Now, our cell phones and laptops have replaced live television. It seems odd sometimes when I turnSpace Gray Iphone 6 on the television set. And you might ask yourselves, why all the T.V. talk? Well because the television has been the main source of how we get information out to the masses. But now that is rapidly going away and replacing itself with other forms of connecting to each other. But how will we use the communication?

Meaning, more and more, we will start to see augmented reality (AR). The computer generated graphics that were only in Hollywood movies, will now beach, grass, landscapebe of use to the populace. Seeing through the lens of Terminator and Robo Cop was seen as revolutionary in the 1980’s, and is coming to fruition through the creation of AR and VR (Virtual Reality). AR will be, in my opinion, better than VR. Because AR is existing in this real space with added forms of advancement. Like watching a movie from your AR headset in Central Park versus the VR, watching a movie wearing the headset at home, yet inside a theater in the virtual world.

Now, there are skeptics that feel that this form of technology will make us even more impersonal than we are now. I tend to disagree because we are more connected the more the technology advance. Pokemon Go proved how connected we are becoming. A game where people who were complete app, augmented reality, gamestrangers were connecting to each other to play the game. Other skeptics might see these advancements as a way to get in the way of daily activities. But, with the increase in innovation, people will become more active once you can incorporate the augmented world into your workout. Video games, such as first player shooter games will be all the rave. Just imagine, AR Call of Duty tournaments in Central Park.

In the end, we are reluctant to see what the future holds. You have people who are from an industrialized time period who see these advancements as a way to hurt jobs. But there is no stopping the technological advancements. You have to adjust and role with the punches. Because the change is inevitable, so get used to it. Time will always tick forward, as well as man with it. Adjust to the changes or be left behind.

WRITING! DIRECTING! PRODUCING: HOW I’M NAVIGATING THE FILM WORLD

Close-up of a Man

“A tough road ahead.”

In November of 2015, I made my first short film. It is the beginning of my Independent Filmmaking career. I did not attend film school, so I am learning while doing. The first film was a seven minute short entitled, “First Day Fears. A film that you can watch on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvgKx6fDflA). The film took me an entire year to edit because of the process I had to undergo. Now, had I had an editor to assist me along, it would have been completed earlier. But this is the learning curve I must take on my journey. Now that I am on to my second short film, I get that feeling again.

That feeling, you know that feeling of will I raise the funding, won’t I raise the funding. The Indiegogo campaign is next month, and I cannot believe it has been a year since I started promoting the project. Hopefully this goes well planned so I can move on to my next which I plan on it being a feature. You see, this process is a long tedious process that can take years to Image result for indiegogoaccomplish. But a lot of people don’t realize it can take years. They just look on a screen and see film. You would think it took about year to a year and a half. But sometimes films have taken five to ten years, or sometimes more. Now how long will my first feature take to push.

Well, I am putting myself on a two year window to build it, and then raise the funding to shoot it. So in all, I would say about three years in all. You might ask yourself, what is my process for making my films. For right now, I of course start with an idea. I build a character analysis about the person/s who will be the principle actors. Then I go on to writing my outline, which is a tedious process. Well why, why are my outlines so tedious? The reason is that I see the entire film all the way through. Wait, wait, wait, really? That’s right, from beginning to end, all the way through. So how do I do it?

Imagine sitting in a theater seat, then the theater goes black. From there, the opening credits pop onto the screen, and into the first scene. The title emerges somewhere around this time, then we go into the movie. Imagine the whole movie, all the way until the closing credits as they scroll down the screen. And that is how I build my screenplay outline. So when I write the Image result for screenplayscript, I know the character, I know the story and I start from the beginning of the outline, and write the script all the way through. Knowing the story and the characters, I base the dialogue around that in each scene from my outline; and that’s the first draft.

Now, my first draft is the first draft, most likely, none of the first stuff will make the cut because I write more than I need. Once I do have myself a Image result for pre-production planworkable script, I set the script aside. Opening myself a nice spreadsheet, I start to build myself a pre-production plan. In that plan, I take into account
how long it took me to write my script. Then I go along add how much time it could approximately take to complete task that must be accomplished. Image result for storyboardFor example, from my workable script, I design myself a storyboard that is basic. This storyboard will show in imagery the story from start to finish. Here is where I would start building my social media awareness for my film. Because I start my budgetary concerns at this initial point.

Over the course of this past year, I took into account many different budget concerns: wardrobe, props, equipment, staff, insurance, location for shoot, craft services, editing, and composition (music). This budget I work, as well as adjusting the script if need be along the way. Now for me, I raised Image result for film budgetfunding on a crowdfunding platform. So about halfway into the pre-production planning, I started brainstorming incentives for people who give toward my film. Time progress on as I continue to refine the budget and eventually coming to an Indiegogo launch date. This will be the time frame for me to raise funding for my film. And in this time, you have no clue the amount of money raised.

But eventually the campaign ends, and you wait for the finances to clear so you can start funding your film. Make sure you give those that chose an incentive their goods. Then you want to start purchasing and hiring for the film. By the time the Indiegogo campaign was already complete I had my People at the Green Grass Field With the Distance Holding Filming Camera during Day Timeactors. Days pass, and then, the shoot date. All this time put in, and you’re finally here. You have no clue still how the day will go, but hopefully it works out. My day went fine, except for a few issues, sound, some continuity, oh and a key player didn’t show; yeah that’s nice. But nonetheless, I still made my first short film.

In the end, I learned some valuable lessons. One, start researching venue space early. Don’t rely on one actor to fill spots, you may have to react on the fly. And last, but not least, I say start building your project early. It isn’t guaranteed to work, but you have done preparation at least. So, hopefully this next one goes well, so I can move forward. So, I strap up, and here goes nothing: lights, camera, action.

REALITY WORLD: WHY ARE PEOPLE SO FIXATED

cinema, dark, display

“Calm down people, you’re just watching people live their lives.”

I have always tried understanding what is it about reality television that makes people patronize it so much. You’re not watching a real television series where actors are skilled at their craft. And you’re watching a show where people are placed in situations for bad things to happen. It is considered assisted reality. But I don’t get anything from it myself. I have tried watching and can’t find anything that I like personally. But for some reason, women especially, love reality television shows. So I have tried to come up with a few reasons as to why this might be so. And they are on the border of disturbing and confusing.

The disturbing reason why I feel that people watch reality television falls under two equations. One equation has to do with the idea that people may like watching regular people who are just as screwed up as themselves. My world is not perfect so watching this show makes me feel better about myself and my situation. Another equation has to do with people who appear to have these lavish lifestyles, but lives are out of order. It makes people say to themselves, “Wow, I see rich folks are just as crazy as poor folks.” The reality about this is that they don’t have these interesting lives. It is assisted to make you think they do. But are there other reasons people watch so ritualistically.

Another reason I came up with for the patronizing of reality television shows is the voyeuristic aspect of watching the show. Watching something that you feel you shouldn’t be watching. You sit at home in your living room looking at the screen thinking to yourself. “I shouldn’t be watching this right now, but it’s too good to stop now.” It sounds very predatory, but it’s the same reason people have a love for amateur pornography. That’s not to say that people who watch reality television is of perverted nature. It’s just that we love looking on at something that is taboo or persona non-grada. And we turn it off thinking to ourselves we got away with viewing something no one thought we would enjoy. Yet when others tell us they like it as well, we open up and enjoy as a community.

In the end, I don’t see the trend of reality shows slowing down anytime soon. Every year there’s some new show popping up. The popular ones are the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes. These are people that for the longest, lived their lives in a way that very few of us knew about. But now their house doors are open. Only problem is that there has been a divorce on each of these reality shows. Why, because you don’t bring cameras into your marriage. And the aspect of fame has popped into the equation as well. Whatever it is, people tune in and can’t wait until the next season of whatever show they are watching.

LEBRON HATE: WHY PEOPLE WANT HIM TO FAIL SO BAD

Image result for lebron james

“He’s not the first and won’t be the last.”

NBA All-Star Lebron James has been dealing with controversy ever since he decided to leave Cleveland the first time and head to the Miami Heat. Since then, he has returned to Cleveland, yet the hate has still been going strong. And now that he has surpassed Michael Jordan as the all-time leader in scoring in the playoffs, people having been making the comparison. Now, more hate than ever has popped up because he’s being compared to arguably the greatest NBA player in history. So I started to come up with a theory as to why people may have an issue with Lebron being compared to Jordan. And it has to do with two things: his move to Miami and breaking records.

The first issue people have with Lebron and being compared to Jordan is that Jordan never left the Bulls for another team. When he left basketball, it was to go to play baseball and that was for a short stint. Jordan also never asked other athletes for help because he couldn’t win a championship with the Bulls himself. So that move caused a lot of people to not like him also. Nonetheless, he went 2-4 in wins in the NBA finals with the Miami Heat before returning to Cleveland. Then, as he returned, his first year back, he was defeated by Golden State Warriors, then beat them next year. Now, he is in the conversation with the greats. People are still not willing to let go of the Miami move and don’t feel he earned his rings. But another reason for the disdain is the broken records.

We look at Michael Jordan as this deity of basketball, so when Lebron surpassed him, it was major. Lebron has not only broken his playoff point record, but also seems to show no signs of slowing down. We look at Jordan like this unbeatable God that no one in our lifetime could beat, then James comes along and crush. And that’s the hate he receives, he crushed so many belief systems in the impossible. When you think you have witnessed something special and someone comes along and completely kills the idea of the impossible. But people, come on now, records are meant to be broken. Just as Lebron broke MJ’s record, someone will eventually come along to beat Lebron’s records.

See, in the end, Lebron is not the only person to be compared to a past beloved athlete and get rejected. And now James is in the NBA finals and more people want him to lose more than ever. They want him to lose so bad, and it’s sad. Sad, not just because people are routing another man’s failure. Sad because their greatest moment in life might be another man’s misfortune.
