KEEP QUIET AND KEEP WORKING: WHY WE PROTECT PEOPLE IN POWER WHO DO WRONG

“Power can corrupt to be covered up.”

The photo above is of legendary film producer Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein has been in the news over the past week since the allegations of his sexual misconduct over the years emerged. Now that he has been removed the Weinstein Company, the conversations are starting. So many people are now saying that they knew something was up. Actresses are stating to now come out and share their stories. But, how come no one came out sooner? And it has a lot to do with having a position of power. A man like Weinstein is at the top of the heap in the entertainment business. So no one would dare come out and state how they genuinely felt. Only a chosen few have stated how they felt and the rest kept quiet. And now that he is ostracized, it’s in the books that we can all now talk about Harvey. So what is about power that keeps people quiet?

As children, we are raised to be honest and stand-up. Then once we become adults, all the rules go out the door. We find ourselves defending people that we would otherwise never defend. Because it’s easy to say that we are these stand-up people when there is nothing on the line. But in that space and time, it’s harder to go against the grain. And the higher the person sits on the totem pole, the harder it is to talk. So if you work a regular 9-5, and see misconduct you get nervous. But at this level you can anonymously give the name of the person/people involved. On the other hand, when looking at a company the size of Enron, you can understand why it’s a tougher go. But a woman did flip on Enron, yet ever since then, she has been a pariah in the financial sector, even though she is a hero to the masses.

Which is a main reason as well that people don’t talk and protect the ones in power. It’s also because when the time comes to testify, you will be ostracized later on. Why, well because so many people might be conducting the same type of business. So they applaud because they are happy it’s not them getting penalized. And in the end we all keep quiet when we see things happening. Because no one wants to feel the repercussions of being ousted for talking. So keep quiet, and keep your job; then talk if something is ever uncovered. It’s ugly, but that is the harsh reality of living in our society where power reigns supreme.

OH SAY CAN YOU STAND! WHAT COULD BE THE REAL ISSUE WITH NFL PROTEST

Image result for nfl protest

“Stand for something.”

Over the past couple of weeks, the news has been tracking the controversy over the protest by athletes over the national anthem. A move which have sent fans of football over the top. People feel that the protest is disrespectful to the flag and others feel it is disrespectful to the military. While you have a collection of people who feel both sentiment. Then there the viewers on the other end of the spectrum who feel that the players should be protesting the anthem over police brutality. But my question is, How many of these people are really upset over the national anthem?” Is it just the anthem, or is it more of a conversation that people don’t want to have? Are people stating that it is the anthem as a way to hide behind their true feelings? I have a few theories as to why, but I also have observed why it has to be more than just disrespect.

Fans of sports are saying it’s disrespectful, but there are much worse acts that go against the flag than an NFL protest. And for the most part, all we do is ignore the act. Yet, when an athlete kneels, you would think the world was going to end. If you are against the desecration of the flag, then why are you only compelled to act now? Why wait until a player kneel then go on the attack. It seems just as self serving as the athletes at this point. Especially not even a full month ago men and women marched holding Confederate flags and Swastikas in the streets of Virginia. And countless troops lost their lives during World War 2 fighting the Nazis. So for people to not come out in droves, it was quite odd to see it now. But I have three reasons why people are not as interested in the anthem; yet using the troops as something to hide behind.

Number one, you have the group that knows police brutality and racism exist, but just want to ignore it. They figure, maybe if I ignore it, it will go away. Just act like it is something that is just an isolated incident, then we can go about our daily lives. Because I work all week, and the last thing I want to hear is more politics. Now what I want is to come to the game and or watch it at home with my family. We get it it, you hate Trump, can I just watch this game in peace. This is to me the first level of people you have in America that are against the protest from the players. And then there are the second wave of people that exist who are against the National Anthem protest. And they are the I know it exist types of people, yet it’s not my problem.

The it’s not my problem people are the ones who say, “I know that it goes on, but it’s not my community.” They don’t care if you are getting abused by law enforcement or treated fairly because it isn’t reflective of where they live. To this group they are more concerned with what ales them and that’s it. They know when you walk up the street you’re going to deal with a degree of hate from someone if you’re a minority. But hey, when I walk throughout my community, it doesn’t look this way. And the police that are in my neighborhood are usually officers that live here in this neighborhood. So they way I see it, play ball and shut up. So this group feels this way, yet are they the only group outside the first group I explained? No; the third group are the real cynical people. They not only don’t care, but agree with the nature of the offense that is being protested.

They are the people who say, “I know it goes on, and you’re lucky it isn’t worse.” “Be happy you’re free in America to any extent because you shouldn’t have that much; now shut up and play football.” They are the people that would love to express their sentiment of how much they truly hate you, but can’t. So they hide behind fake profiles on the internet and talk trash. These people just want to be mad at anything, and at times they themselves exemplify disrespect for the flag. Yet now they can have a reason to be in on the hatred under the guise of the flag and military troops. And in the end, this is the fan base of football and how people feel. People love the flag and the troops, but to the extent that fans are going to, no. Because there are too many symbols that actually do spit in the face of America’s existence that we give a pass to, or ignore that are worse than the protest. But in this country people don’t express true sentiment, unless it’s in the comforts of their own homes.

SOCIAL MEDIA MADNESS: HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME THE NEW HYSTERIA

Related image

“Too much social media forces you to be less social.”

The personal computer was first designed as this educational tool for people in society. And since the advent of the internet, it has become this machine that got away from everyone. But once social media started to take hold, everything has began to go haywire. And why is that? Well, the main reason is because everyone in society today is allowed to have an opinion. It used to be in the past that having an opinion existed, but it wasn’t taken at such face value unless it came from more qualified people. Now, anyone who builds themselves a platform can speak to the masses. And not only speak to the masses, but also be taken seriously. But what is it about the social media landscape that causes the hysteria? For starters you have to understand us as people. This is a basic layout of who we are.

People are these emotional creatures who feel just because we have an emotion, it automatically means something. And that feeling is broad and changes constantly, which is why so many of our human emotions don’t mean anything. If you’re passionate about ten things, then three or four are important; maybe even less. But in the society we live in today, everything is supposed to be important. If I have ten things that are important to me, then all ten mean something. So when you turn on the computer, on top of the 24 hour news cycle, you have a constant reminder of how important all these things are to you. It’s to consistently keep your attention, but it inevitably creates more anxiety and depression. It speaks so much to the human psyche because everything is urgent, breaking news, or special report. All three aspects of life that make us panic when we think of anything important.

And on top of the importance you have people in society who want to be mad. In the past, people who were mad, just were mad. Now there is an outlet that allows them to have voice and these people are letting everyone hear their voices. They’re able to do so with social media, and we are listening. They know we are listening and they get louder by the day. So we look at all the news we are constantly bombarded with, and their hate comments, that we began to feel depressed ourselves. A seemingly happy person instantly becomes unhappy. And in the end, the hysteria comes from watching and reading so much on television and the internet. What has been created to inform us is making us depressed. So if you want to decreases your odds of going crazy, you have to disconnect every now and then.

WHEN PERSONAL INTEREST COLLIDE WITH CORPORATE INTEREST

Image result for espn jemele

“Know that you represent them inside and out.”

The above photo is of sports journalist Jemele Hill of ESPN. She recently came under fire for her comments aimed toward President Donald J. Trump. She stated via her Twitter account that she felt President Trump was not only a voice for White Supremacy, but a member of their organizations. It sparked criticism enough to catch the attention of the United States Press Secretary SarahImage result for espn jemele Huckabee Sanders who stated that Jemele’s comments were “fireable.” Even the president himself felt that she should be relieved of her duties for making such comments about him. And it must have struck a nerve with someone because ESPN issued a statement regarding Hill’s comments directed at the president. So they must have really taken issue to the comments that Jemele made to put out a statement. Or was there another reason they decided to issue a statement regarding her (Hill’s) comments.

ESPN is a multinational cable television provider of worldwide sports. And as a company owned by Walt Disney, they are aimed at trying to maintain a certain level of decor on their television programming. Now, Hill has her freedom of speech, but ESPN has the ability to take a stance as well. Meaning that if they truly wanted to, they could fire her. Not on grounds of what she saidImage result for espn because that violates her freedom of speech. But if they feel what she said could cost them in monetary damages then they are in their full right to let her go. Now, those in Jemele’s corner might say she spoke the truth, but here is what you don’t realize. You represent the brand that is ESPN; and while under that brand you have to abide by their rules and regulations. Meaning, if politics are to not allowed then you don’t discuss politics. But if they are allowed , the speech has to be in alliance with company regulatory measures.

It sounds unfair, and it is, but that is what happens when you work for a company. You see, prior, Jemele and her colleague Michael Smith ran a podcast show that became popular. And that popularity opened doors for them in much more lucrative and diverse business environments. But with that bump in exposure comes the rules when playing the game at that level. And what Image result for walt disney company you can say and do on a podcast is not the same as when you are representing a brand like Walt Disney. Yet many still feel she should be able to express herself because it is her rights. And once again, here is where you are put into this weird trick basket which is why people don’t voice their opinions. You can freely say anything you want; but it’s an organization’s right to fire you if you don’t align within their company policies and/or cost them in monetary damages.

And a lot of the sentiment in the sports world is still stemming from the fact that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was shut out of football for choosing to not stand for the national anthem. A move against him that has even sparked protest outside of the NFL’s headquarters in New York City. So with so much going on, it’s no wonder they are trying to distance themselves from her statements. But in the end, Hill is still an employee of ESPN. So for now it’s a waiting game to see the final decision. And as much as I agree with freedom of speech, you have to be willing to also take the lose from a company not willing to continue to do business with you.

A MOVE IN A NEW DIRECTION: HOW THE INTERNET IS KILLING THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS

board, cinema, cinematography

“A decline that they are not prepared for.”

Looking over the recent statistics on films in theaters, I saw that numbers appeared to be down. Maybe that’s the reason why these movies that come out later in the year around the campaigning months for Golden Globes and Oscars take place. Movies might not be able to stand on their own anymore in theaters. And a major reason for that is the internet. The internet is such a machine that you don’t need to patronize your favorite show or movies anymore. One reason being that there is more variety and the other is that you don’t have to leave the comforts of your home. So what will happen to the state of movies as time progress? Because theaters make their money by films being debut in theaters. But if people are not coming to theaters to see movies, that smells death for them.

Hollywood can always adjust to the changes, but not the theater venues. That’s unless these theater venues decide to get themselves a platform for films, and then they are in the game. Not only in the game, they don’t have to go through Hollywood, and you can go straight to the distributor as a producer. And that in turn, might be death to a lot of studios. Because everyone who is interested in making films or television is in the game now. But they are not running out to Los Angeles like years ago, but they are building their own platforms. Some teenager with a couple of friends can now be the boss of their own machine if they are willing to put in the time. Because we are coming into what is really known as the open market. And the market is the market, they don’t care who they are buying from. As long as you give them a good product and/or service.

I myself, am pursuing screenwriting and Amazon has a platform for people to submit their screenplays. And if the company is interested, they will offer an amount for the script, or even your series through Amazon studios. And for a company that just bought Whole Foods for a whopping $13.5 billion dollars, they can afford your $200,000 script. Meanwhile the average screenwriter makes only $100,000 in Hollywood. Oh, and I forgot to mention you don’t need an agent to do so. Agents and managers usually take their 20% collectively right off the top. Now you don’t have to split anything if you are good at what you do. What’s the purpose of going through the whole process of trying to find an agent. They now are in a position where they have to come and find talent themselves. So guess what, they are now on the chopping block as it pertains to the business.

In the end, you see the red carpet events and the celebrities dress to the nine. But internally they know what’s really going on. It’s the reason these superhero movies keep getting made in the business. Corporations run studios; and the studios are allotted only a certain amount of funding to make movies. That means, spend $100 million on the next epic film and then make $800 – $900 million in theaters worldwide. The venue get their 60% cut, and distribution or distributors gets their 40%. You’re talking $320 million to $360 million for the film coming back to the distributor/s. And since the customer never says a word and keeps spending, why not keep making them. So remake and reboot and series until the customers are tired and then move on from there.

WWW.NOBRAIN.COM: HOW IS THE INTERNET MAKING US MORE DEPRESSED AND LESS INFORMED

Image result for INTERNET

“You would think it would be an improvement not a hindrance.”

With our hands on so much information, you would think that it could potentially make us smarter. But it has not made us smarter, yet more so it has made us more slaves to our vulnerability. Which all sounds odd that we are more slaves with more information. But the information is not making us smarter because there is so much falsified information out there how do you know what’s real or fake. From the mass media on television in their competition for ratings, to the internet websites looking for hits and visitors rather than the truth. So what is the consumer left with, nothing more than multiples pages of information leading to nowhere. But then again, when we hear the truth we disregard it because lies sound much better. Well, why does the lie sound better to our ears than the truth.

This is the main reason why conspiracy theorists are so popular because they feed into not only the curiosity, but the ignorance of those not in the know. And the more we are feed it, the more it has led to people becoming more and more miserable and less and less happy. Then on top of it all, we see the perceptions people show us of their lives and it makes our existence seems that much not worth living. Everything that they are engaged in seems oh so exciting, yet they are stuck with what someone else is doing that is more than themselves as well. It just becomes a circle of fascination with ourselves leading to no one being happy with themselves. I have always wondered about the people in charge of putting out a lot for this content, how do they feel. We are the consumers, but how do they feel having to funnel this information to the masses. What is their level of satisfaction in life.

Meaning, what are the people in companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube doing on a daily basis. It seems to me like their jobs are more enjoyable because they get a chance to make the news. And when you’re making the news, you get to create anything you want. Or is it more like they are creating the community for the people to make their own news. And there lies more depression and sadness. The masses have now become journalists, which presents its own set of problems. Professional journalists have a certain way they handle information that is different than the average Joe. So it is more trustworthy coming from the mouths of someone trusted on T.V. than some young blogger or videographer on a platform. Yet in the recent years, journalists themselves have become these get it out there first type of people. No matter if the story is true or false.

So now, in the end, we have cultivated these mediums where we receive all this news and information. From Google to Facebook, YouTube to the national news outlets. We are constantly bombarded with information and news, but the internet has become the biggest form of receiving information lately. Yet since it’s coming from so many unknown and known journalists, we don’t know what to believe. And for that reason, we have become depressed, sad, and miserable. Receiving news from so many people in so many forms makes us not trust anything we hear until it is smack dab in our faces. By that time it is far too late to react.

REALITY FICTION: HOW REALITY TELEVISION IS RUINING ENTERTAINMENT

“I can do what they do.”

We are constantly being introduced to some new reality television show. No matter if the show revolves around married couples to game shows with cash prizes. They are spread throughout every aspect of mass media. We patronize them on a daily; regular people in regular situations, with usually some end goal. And that is the just of why we are supposed to watch them. But over time, a lot of that has changed. And now you’re seeing people watch some of these shows as a means to observe conflict. But if your life going great, why would you be interested in consistent conflict. Oh, and trust and believe, a lot of these people’s lives are far from this interesting. But music, mixed with cutaways and fades on top of the action, you feel like you’re in the room with the people. The only problem is, do they possess talent.

Because we have always had some form of reality television. People today say they are sick of reality television, but game shows are a form of reality television. And who does not like a round of Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and The Price Is Right. Image result for keeping up with the kardashians castBut we don’t view them as reality television because we are not supposed to be under the illusion that they are entertaining us. But when people say they are sick of reality television, they mean the sitcom shows based around friends and families. The shows like: The Real Housewives, Basketball Wives, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and Honey Boo Boo. Yet no one is forcing you to watch any of these shows. I myself am not a fan of any of these shows, so I just don’t watch them. But there is a segment of the population who watch just to be upset.

I’m not part of that segment, but I do agree that reality T.V. is hurting entertainment. Because now anybody whose anybody says, “Oh they have a show, I know I can be on television.” And the underlying problem with this, is that when entertainment was seen as this beautiful untouchable industry, we loved it. I thought you had to get on a spaceship and fly to some faraway world to be in the entertainment industry. But since the entertainment industry entertain these non-celebrity famous faces, the lure is gone. If all it takes now is to put your family on T.V. with some controversy to make money, people feel they can make it. The underlying problem with that is with each of these shows a family is broken apart. Why, well because you never put your life on a public display like television or the internet for mass consumption.

It’s because things that go on inside your homes, behind closed doors are what keep families together. The moment society can see your relationships, your life is open to public scrutiny. And since there is a constant barrage of attacks, for which you are not ready for, you crumble to the pressure. Image result for housewives of orange countyAnd funny I used the words, “ready for.” Because famous actors, directors, musicians, and even athletes have a planning process. They planned this career and are prepared for what comes with it. Reality personalities are not ready to deal with everyone in their business. They see dollars and also fame like fame is this easy road. Average people look at fame as a cake walk until photographers start publicly putting out images of you in bathing suit questioning your physic. That’s when the whole entire house comes crashing down on them. Yet still, I don’t see reality T.V. slowing down.

In the end, you look at a situation like the Kardashians-Jenners, who people thought would be a fly by night family. Now, they are running businesses that are valued collectively at $1 billion. Still, no matter how you view them, these shows are not only here to stay, but changing what is entertainment. Which in return begins to devalue the work of so many accomplished artists in the entertainment business who have put in years of work.
