MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES: WHY IT’S SO EMBARRASSING

“The battle is real.”

In the United States, millions of people suffer from mental health issues in this country. And the reasons for these issues are very broad and wide. The only issues that I can speak about directly are my own. That’s right, I have dealt with issues concerning mental health for the greater portion of my life. And the issues have been anxiety, depression, and a slight case of bipolar. The majority of it is anxiety with the depression coming soon after. So if I had to break down my internal issues, it would be 70% anxiety, 20% depression, and 10% bipolar. Some stuff is in my head and can be dealt with, while others will never go away. And what’s interesting is that, that internal anxiety that stems from fears have made me more urgent in life. But why would a person like me, as smart, kind, thoughtful, become the three categories?

Well, for starters, it comes from a lack of interest in what everyone else in your peer group is doing. We might see that sometimes as a good thing in life, but it can be bad as well. When you begin to lose interest in the activities of your age group, you feel uncomfortable. Why? Well, when you can’t connect to people your age, you begin to isolate yourself from the group. The conversations that they have and what triggers in you, makes you feel weird. They all are talking about going to the movies or a music festival. But you have no interest in any of the age appropriate fun. And the activities that do spark interest in you, is so past the other kids your age. I never dated also because thinking about dating was more interesting than actually dating. So I lost my virginity late in life as well.

And that lack of interest and inability to connect makes you depressed. Because you are considered weird by your peers. Yet it wasn’t until I became an adult I realized that I was not weird, I just thought in regards to things past my age group. All the other young people my age want to go to SXSW, Coachella, or Lollapalooza; I am trying to become a great writer and academic. Then it hit me, there are plenty of people my age who think the same way as myself. Plenty of people who have become introverts because we see things as it pertains to the world that takes us out of our age group. When your peers are trying to figure out what nightclub to go to on the weekend, you’re trying to gain intellectual capital to catapult yourself into success. Your lack of interest in one area, heightens your awareness in other areas, giving you the ability to think in a way most your age don’t. You view the world a lot more wide and broad, and not as myopic.

In the end, my brain has grown as it pertains to the way I see the world socially, politically, and economically. And I’m not referring to a one sided view. Perspective, a perspective that allows me to see the world from others viewpoint that I would normally not agree with. I walk the streets and observe humanity in our natural element and gain my insights into the world through daily interactions. Most people my age are not walking the street people watching as a means to understand the human construct. So my anxiety and depression stems from not connecting because the inability to be interested in anything my age group is interested in, yet I don’t want to be around people much older. It has taken me 30 years to understand and hopefully as I reach middle age, my life will be want I wanted it to be 20 years prior.

POOR MAN’S HUNGER DRIVE: WHY PEOPLE FROM A CERTAIN SOCIOECONOMIC GRIND HARDER THAN OTHERS

Image result for GOALS

“A thick-skinned path to success is tough for people with soft skin.”

As a young man pursuing my career as a writer, photographer, and filmmaker; I will be going through these up and down periods in my life. But what has prepared me for that was growing up in a poor household. With everything that is a downside of life at the bottom, there is this upside. And that upside is that you have this willingness to succeed that no one else has in life. So many people who aim to succeed leave their parents house and return after college having to move back home. But there are the ones who moving back home is not an option because home is not available anymore. These are the students who take college more serious and work through school rather than indulge in a social life. They realize that there is no backup after college and must be working to attain something.

But what are some other reasons as to why the kids born into a household of substantial means don’t have the true grit as the poor. And it goes back to the adversity. When you watch professional athletes, a lot of the greats have come from these poverty stricken environments. They have all the odds stacked up against them and they fight like their lives depend on it. How many well to do kids fight like their lives depend on it? It’s because they work to succeed, but they have a support system there to aid them. When you don’t have anything, and you are put in a position where you’re forced to be better, then you may ultimately win. It has a lot to do with survival. If you took a person from the upper class and told them to hunt in the safari of Africa for food it would be harder than a homeless man not knowing where his next meal will come from.

In the end, for the reasons above are the main reasons why some people of wealth cut their children off financially. Because they want their children to know how to face adversity. What if the family fortune is lost for some reason or another. Then what you’ll have is a self-destruct kid. They have never known what it was like to hustle in life. Now they have to do something and don’t know where to start. So you must throw them out into society and make them fend for themselves. If not, then you’ll turn into an enabler and it could ultimately hurt the child in the end.

GREEN CITY: HOW LONG BEFORE WE BECOME MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Image result for GREEN CITY

“A greener, better, us.”

I am quite unfamiliar with the going green campaigns that have been going around. But to me, it sounds pretty interesting that we could possibly see ourselves living a better, cleaner society. For now, we only have photos that are two dimensional models of what possibly could be for the future. As you can see, the photo at the top of the page is an example of what could be for a city going green. And if you know anything about the geographical landscape of the globe, trees help protect us from carbon dioxide in the air. So when you think about going green it makes sense to green a lot of our lives in the future. But what has caused this phenomena in the recent years? Well, for starters, it has a lot to do with the industrialization in our global economy.

Over the past 100 years in the United States, America has engaged in the industrialized marketplace. We heavily relied on factories for decades coming out of the 1800’s. And now that we have entered this new tech space, we are also making adjustments to the lifestyles we lead. In the past no one really knew that the gases that we were taking into our bodies were toxic working in these Image result for industrialization
factories. We didn’t realize the other chemicals we were exposing ourselves to while we worked long hours. But now that we know more, we have had to ship jobs overseas; in addition it saves a lot of money. Jobs have been lost, but productivity is more efficient and goods are cheaper. Besides our health and a new industry for employment, what are other benefits of a green society?

Well, plant life is a lot more lush because we were killing them by tainting the air quality. Like I said prior, the industrialization created a lot of jobs and opportunities. But the problems weren’t just health issues, we were constantly pumping gases into the air, effecting the quality. With this new push for a green society, we have animals and plants that were once facing extinction, able to restore themselves on our planet. And what was once thought of as a planet where we destroyed everything in our wake for capital gain, we would become more conscious. And that consciousness will inevitably aid everyone; both humans, creatures, and plant life.

In the end, it’s a topic that I am still glancing at every now and then. But over time, I think that more and more, I can see myself delving into this area. Going green is still fairly new for us right now, but as time progress, it will catch on Image result for GREEN CITYbecause it will ultimately aid in prolonging our lives on Earth.

INFINITE NOTHINGNESS: COULD THERE HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN A TIME WITHOUT ANYTHING

Image result for UNIVERSE

“Before our universe was nothing which is something.”

Before the beginning of our universe, there was supposed to be infinite nothing. But if you look into the definition of nothing, the definition of nothing is the absence of something. Yet as people, the only problem with our definition of nothing is anything that is not of tangible use. There are more elements of something that we can not see and feel, that exist than not. So, even with having nothing there is still something within that nothing. Like for example, carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and tasteless; which is extremely deadly because we are use to detecting problems as humans we can sense. So going back to the universe that our planet exist within. What really was before the existence of something? Was there something, but too small for us to detect? Or was the difference between absolutely nothing and something taking place so fast and so powerful that absolute nothing was a minuscule amount of time?

The first way to look at this is by means of example. Our universe is pitch black; so take out a blank sheet of black paper. This blank sheet of paper is the universe in which we dwell. And within this universe is everything that is in it including all of us. Now, let’s say before this universe, there was infinite nothing. So let’s break down the conversation a little more. The paper: meaning before our universe there was nothing. And that is both a true and false statement. Because without life in the universe there is nothing. But the statement of before our universe is nothing is false too because that sheet of paper that is our universe is something. So this is how a statement can be true and false, depending on the context of the statement. If you’re talking actual tangible life, then yes, there was infinite nothing; but infinite nothing including life would still mean the sheet of paper is something.

Now here is what’s interesting; since our universe is the sheet of paper, what was before the sheet of paper. Well, how is paper made; a paper maker. Someone must use something to make sheets of paper. So what was done to create our sheet of paper (universe). Because when we talk about our sheet, there had to have been a sporadic event that took place to create this sheet which includes our solar system, moons, galaxies, and stars. So to make sheets of paper, who have the materials (natural synthetic substances of cellulose), the machinery to press it together, and then drying them into flexible sheets. So as you see, there is a process in making paper. What were the natural synthetics, the machinery, and the drying stage? Now granted this is a very basic example, but it’s still a process of creating something. Which basically means, our universe is really something even before something.

And in the end, that’s the intrigue with our universe. That even before the time of something, there had to have been something. Because our human definition of nothing is the absence of something. But something had to be done to make our universe which constitutes the absence of something, from which something is created. So there never was a time that our universe was nothing because something had to have been done to make it into even nothing. WHAT A MIND BENDER!!!!

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: CHANGING THE FOOD WE EAT

appetite, apple, close-up

“Your body is a machine, keep it clean.”

Recently, I have been thinking about making a lifestyle change regarding the food I consume. And it’s not because my health is bad, I just would like to try something new. I thought about trying a raw diet or even becoming a pescetarian for a while. I love eating seafood, so becoming a pescetarian would actually be easy. But since I was a baby I have had a diet that consisted of eating meat. And to add to it, it’s part of the culture that I grew up in as a child. Meat was so part of our daily intake, I don’t know if I could give it up at all. But some people have never even had meat a day in their lives. It was just how they were raised. But not me, I grew up in a family that we had more meat than side dishes.

Now if you’re one of these animal lovers, then you would hate to be apart of my family. But just because you eat meat does not mean you hate animals. As people on Earth we have had to survive off of the land as much as possible. That includes any creature that inhabited the land. And given we had to feed so many people, animals were the meal. But vegetarians and pescetarianism has been an aspect of society for forever. You just now have this wave of people who are going back to eating less meat. And it does not have anything to do with preserving the animals on our planet. It has everything to do with health. When eating meat you have a digestive tract that consist of thin lining. And meat pushing through that track is hard to digest. So eating too much meat, especially the tougher the meat, makes digesting more difficult.

Now, with digestive problems comes illnesses because meat lying in the tract for too long causes problems in the intestines. Over time, you start to develop sicknesses because the meat is basically rotting inside of your body. So people have become aware of this and have made moves to eat less meat if any at all. It just makes sense considering we want to prolong our lives as much as possible because this is our only life to live. And caring for yourselves is what we must do for longevity. There is no guarantee, some people eat healthy and still die of sicknesses. But the point is to care anyways because it’s about playing the odds. And in the end, my thoughts of changing my dining choices comes from better eating habits. I just turned thirty years old last week. This is best time to start eating differently because staring later in your forties could be too late.

SOCIAL MEDIA MADNESS: HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME THE NEW HYSTERIA

Related image

“Too much social media forces you to be less social.”

The personal computer was first designed as this educational tool for people in society. And since the advent of the internet, it has become this machine that got away from everyone. But once social media started to take hold, everything has began to go haywire. And why is that? Well, the main reason is because everyone in society today is allowed to have an opinion. It used to be in the past that having an opinion existed, but it wasn’t taken at such face value unless it came from more qualified people. Now, anyone who builds themselves a platform can speak to the masses. And not only speak to the masses, but also be taken seriously. But what is it about the social media landscape that causes the hysteria? For starters you have to understand us as people. This is a basic layout of who we are.

People are these emotional creatures who feel just because we have an emotion, it automatically means something. And that feeling is broad and changes constantly, which is why so many of our human emotions don’t mean anything. If you’re passionate about ten things, then three or four are important; maybe even less. But in the society we live in today, everything is supposed to be important. If I have ten things that are important to me, then all ten mean something. So when you turn on the computer, on top of the 24 hour news cycle, you have a constant reminder of how important all these things are to you. It’s to consistently keep your attention, but it inevitably creates more anxiety and depression. It speaks so much to the human psyche because everything is urgent, breaking news, or special report. All three aspects of life that make us panic when we think of anything important.

And on top of the importance you have people in society who want to be mad. In the past, people who were mad, just were mad. Now there is an outlet that allows them to have voice and these people are letting everyone hear their voices. They’re able to do so with social media, and we are listening. They know we are listening and they get louder by the day. So we look at all the news we are constantly bombarded with, and their hate comments, that we began to feel depressed ourselves. A seemingly happy person instantly becomes unhappy. And in the end, the hysteria comes from watching and reading so much on television and the internet. What has been created to inform us is making us depressed. So if you want to decreases your odds of going crazy, you have to disconnect every now and then.

ARTISANS STILL HAVE A SPACE: WHY CRAFTSMANSHIP IS STILL RESPECTED

Person Making Clay Pot in Front of Girl during Daytime

“Might be a dinosaur, but not a dead dinosaur.”

I am always impressed whenever I see the craftsmanship of people throughout history. I work at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. And there is artifacts designed and built by man that stretch back hundreds and even thousands of years. And when you take a step back and look at the artisans of the past, you can’t help but to be impressed. The magnitude of what they were able to accomplish with such a small amount of tools to perform their jobs. But it were these basics tools and pulley systems which built these past civilizations. So my question to you is, “Is there still room, even in today’s tech savvy environment for artisans/craftsman?” Because with so much manpower being replaced by machines, do these craftsman have a place in our society? And the answer is yes they do. And you know why?

Even with all the technological aspects of society, we are always impressed with the hands on abilities of man. Yes, we are enamored with machines and what they can do. But when you look at the performance of man’s hands on approach, he are seeing something far better. Meaning, it’s one thing to see a statues put together by machinery, but viewing a statue or monument that we ancient, architecture, artused our own hands to build is even better. Like I said before, I work at a museum, and when you see scrolls that were crafted by man or sculptures from the past, you know they used tools that were far less advanced than today. But having to use something less advance yet still getting the job done; and on top of all that lasting throughout history is a job well done. But then you start to think about the future of mankind.

What will be create in today’s society that 1,000 years from now people will be amazed that we were able to build? To us, we say, so what we built a car to drive around. But our future descendants might look at the materials we have built cars with and say, “Wow, I’m surprised those vehicles lasted as long as some of them did with that material.” “Those pieces of metal should have fell apart soon as they put them together.” Which is why you’ll start to see our cars in museums as time progress. Museums guides will say to people, “This here is a Ford pickup truck which was used 500 years ago to transport cargo loads for construction.” “It was one of the transports of its day.” And what’s great about us 500 – 1,000 years from now, we will have all this stuff in perpetuity. So there will be audio and video of this Ford pickup truck in commercials and what it could accomplish on the road and off the road.

In the end, craftsmanship is eternal. We will always look in the past at what man has built and muse at the ingenuity. From theamerica, ancient, architecture simple tools of Cromagnon Man to the building of the pyramids in Egypt, to the carving of Mount Rushmore to public school classrooms where art student are shaping clay into artistic objects of interest. The human intrigue with our abilities to take what’s allotted to us and make life work using the simplest of tools is what makes us great.
