“Who do you prefer to work for in life?”
We have all worked for them, and can’t stand to be around them. They are supervisors on jobs who you live to hate. They are the overbearing types that push and push and push until you do something or say something you regret. They don’t have much power in their own lives, so having a say over you is worth coming to work for them. But I have to ask the question, Do you really have to be hated to be respected on a job? Do you have to carry a big stick in order to grab people’s attention? My answer is no, you don’t have to be the dictator in order to get people to listen. So why are there people like this on the job?
Like I said before, for starters, they are people who don’t get respect in their daily lives outside of work. So when they get on the job, they can be some of the hardest people to work for. Not receiving respect in your daily life in society makes you resent. But most of all, these types of people who don’t get respect know people who do. And if you are someone that get respect easily, and you work for someone that don’t, they can sense it. And they will make your life hell because you remind them of how much they don’t get it. You will also remind them of the people in society that they want respect from and don’ get it.
See, you don’t have to be the dictator to get people to listen. One of the ways to get people to listen is connect to your employees. This task is easily accomplished when you are a good communicator. But most of all, the people who work for you will be able to read that you are a good communicator. So you won’t have to be the dictator type because you know what people need and they know what you expect from them. But, are there other reasons as to why employers may be the dictator? What about the physicality of the person in charge or their gender?
Physicality can play a role in the type of supervisor you’re going to get. At times, you notice men who are less attractive and shorter, I’ve noticed can be tough. Well, how so, how does this play a factor in the way they supervise? Being in the midst of more physical alpha males, you see this Napoleon complex where they might be tougher on you than anyone else. Or if they see people naturally connect to you because you look a certain way. As far as gender, women and men have different styles of supervising. I have had either very friendly or very rude women I have worked for. The very tough feel they have to be because since they are a woman people feel they can walk over them. And the very friendly act this way because they don’t want to come off as too aggressive.
In the end, working for an employer can be either an enjoyable or depressing work environment. Now, for the chosen few who work for themselves and are able to elude this, consider yourselves lucky. Then again, if you are your own boss, chances are, you have employees. So it may be you who is the intolerable employer.
